April 2, 2024August 8, 2025 Seaweed over Obsidian by Jonathan Ugol This tall tumbler by Jonathan Ugol showcases a bold and dramatic glaze combination called Seaweed over Obsidian. The deep, glossy finish and flowing glaze transitions evoke the powerful contrast between earth and ocean. The base glaze, AMACO Obsidian, provides a rich, inky-black surface with subtle reflections and depth. Over this, AMACO Seaweed is applied in two layers, covering the top and flowing slightly below the edge of the black glaze. This creates striking streams of mossy green, ocean blue, and golden copper tones, adding motion and organic variation. The layered effect mimics coastal landscapes or aurora-lit skies. To enrich the lower section, AMACO Ancient Copper adds warm, rusty orange and bronze highlights that ground the piece with earthy texture and glow. The blending of Seaweed and Ancient Copper brings a dynamic, almost painterly quality. Fired to Cone 6 on Clay 66, this piece reveals stunning interactions between dark and light, gloss and shimmer—perfect for those drawn to dramatic glaze movement and atmospheric effects.
