December 27, 2023December 17, 2025 Northern Lights Combo Angela Mendoza Ward Northern Lights plate by Angela Mendoza Ward This plate features a classic Northern Lights glaze combination, thoughtfully broadened with AMACO Snow and Arctic Blue to enhance contrast, movement, and luminosity. The result is a mesmerizing cosmic surface that echoes the flowing drama of the aurora borealis. Deep blues and teals radiate outward with subtle overlaps, punctuated by fiery accents of pink and soft white. These layers mimic the natural dance of light across a night sky, while the dark, textured center adds depth and grounding—evoking both celestial energy and volcanic intensity. Each firing reveals organic variations, ensuring that every piece is truly one of a kind. This expanded Northern Lights palette uses Snow to soften transitions and introduce highlights, while Arctic Blue intensifies the linear motion of the glaze, amplifying the sense of movement and depth across the surface. To support accurate replication of this surface, Angela created four detailed pre-fire reference photos, clearly documenting glaze placement, layering, and line work. These images provide invaluable visual guidance, allowing artists to confidently recreate the combination while still embracing the natural variations that occur during firing. Glaze Application Notes: 3 heavy coats of each with some overlap.
