Textured Turquoise over Honey Flux by Jackie Ford

Frost Porcelain Mug, featuring AMACO Textured Turquoise over Honey Flux

This mug is glazed on Laguna Frost porcelain to create a soft, coastal turquoise fade that breaks beautifully over the form and pools along the rim and shoulder. The surface is built by layering two AMACO Potter’s Choice glazes – Textured Turquoise over AMACO Honey Flux, a combination that encourages movement, gentle speckling, and glossy turquoise depth where the glazes overlap.

What we’re seeing

  • Upper half: A flowing turquoise field with vertical rivulets and pale, watery streaks. This comes from Textured Turquoise interacting with Honey Flux, which helps the turquoise melt, brighten, and travel.
  • Transition line: A natural “tide mark” where the glaze thickness shifts-often showing richer blue-green tones and subtle breaking.
  • Lower half: A soft cream porcelain base protected with a clear glaze so the surface stays food-safe and glossy while keeping the lighter, airy look.
  • Decoration: Golden ginkgo motifs are added as overglaze transfers/decals and fired low afterward so they sit cleanly on top of the glaze without burning out.

Glaze recipe / application notes (as used on this mug)

Clay: Laguna Frost porcelain
Outside (upper 2 inches):

  • AMACO Honey Flux – 3 coats
  • AMACO Textured Turquoise – 3 coats (applied over the Honey Flux)

Outside (bottom):

  • Frost porcelain + clear glaze over the bare lower area (dip first)

Inside:

  • AMACO Textured Turquoise – 3 coats

Firing:

  • Glaze fire to Cone 6
  • Overglaze decals fired to Cone 018

Why Textured Turquoise over Honey Flux works

Using textured turquoise over honey flux produces a layered glaze surface with:

  • More flow and depth (Honey Flux acts like a “mover,” helping the top glaze travel and soften transitions)
  • Richer turquoise variation (thin areas go misty; thicker areas deepen and pool)
  • Organic movement that emphasizes the mug’s curves and gives each piece a one-of-a-kind drip pattern
