Author: Cathie Sheffield-Thompson
Clay Bodies: Laguna Frost and Clayer White
Firing: Cone 6

The Peacock Combo Plate Set by Cathie Sheffield-Thompson demonstrates how layered commercial glazes can create complex patterns from a simple decorative layout. The design begins with carefully placed dots of AMACO Celadons, including Cobalt and Storm, arranged around the rim in a repeating feather-inspired pattern. Over these elements, loops of MAYCO Light Flux are applied to encourage movement during firing, while AMACO Indigo Float provides the final layer that ties the composition together with deep blue tones and subtle variation.

How the Peacock Combo Plate Set Develops During Firing

Each glaze plays a distinct role in the final appearance of the Peacock Combo Plate Set. The Cobalt and Storm Celadons establish the color structure, introducing both lighter and darker blue areas within the feather pattern. MAYCO Light Flux promotes controlled glaze movement as the kiln approaches maturity, softening edges and pulling color outward from the original design. This interaction creates the elongated teardrop forms and radiating lines that resemble the eye markings found in peacock feathers. Indigo Float settles into thicker areas and collects around the outer edges, adding depth and darker accents that define the overall pattern.

Layering Effects in the Peacock Combo Plate Set

The choice of Laguna Frost and Clayer White clay bodies provides a bright foundation that allows the blue glaze palette to remain clean and well-defined after firing. The white surface enhances contrast between the celadons, flux, and floating glaze, making the layered decoration easier to read across the entire plate. The resulting surface combines crisp pattern work with the natural movement of melting glazes, demonstrating how Peacock Combo Plate Set achieves its characteristic feather-like appearance through glaze placement, overlap, and controlled firing rather than surface carving or painting alone.
