April 2, 2024June 8, 2026 Textured Turquoise over Arctic Blue mugs by Jonathan Jon Textured Turquoise over Arctic Blue on Stoneware Mugs Textured Turquoise over Arctic Blue is a popular AMACO glaze combination that produces soft blue transitions, flowing turquoise movement, and distinctive textured effects. Created by Jonathan Jon, these stoneware mugs demonstrate how layered Cone 6 glazes can create depth and variation while remaining suitable for functional pottery. Arctic Blue forms the foundation of the surface with a calm blue tone that remains visible through the upper layers. Over this base, Textured Turquoise develops movement and pooling, creating lighter and darker areas across the body of the mug. The addition of Oatmeal introduces warmth and helps highlight the interaction between the glazes. How Textured Turquoise over Arctic Blue Develops During Firing One of the most recognizable features of Textured Turquoise over Arctic Blue is the cellular pattern that appears where the glazes overlap. During a Cone 6 firing with a ten-minute hold, the glazes begin to move and separate, producing soft transitions between blue, turquoise, cream, and pale green tones. The effect is especially noticeable on vertical surfaces such as mugs and vases. The combination works well on textured pottery because the glaze naturally gathers in recesses and breaks over raised areas. This creates additional visual depth without requiring complicated application techniques.
