Obsidian, Deep Firebrick and Albany Slip Brown

BMIX Cup By Dan Osorio

This beautiful cup showcases a rich, layered glaze combination using AMACO glazes Obsidian, Deep Firebrick and Albany Slip Brown. Applied over Venus White clay and fired to Cone 6 in an electric kiln, the result is a dramatic, high-contrast surface with warm, glowing depth and beautiful lava-like movement.

The process starts with three coats of Obsidian as the base glaze. Over this, two thick coats of Deep Firebrick are brushed onto the top two-thirds of the cup, including the inside walls. Finally, two coats of Albany Slip Brown are applied on top of the Firebrick, both inside and out. This layering creates a cascade of rich reds, dark browns, and subtle black undertones, mimicking the look of molten rock or weathered bark.

The interior pools into a dark, glossy black, while the exterior blends into fiery, earthy textures that break gently along the surface. The subtle transitions and slight gloss variations enhance its handmade character.

Test tiles fired to cone 6 on porcelain reveal both pure colors and smooth transitions between them, offering a clean visual map of how these celadons behave in combination.
