March 28, 2024June 28, 2026 Blue Rutile and Snow over Cobalt by Amber Schnitzius Blue Rutile and Snow over Cobalt Blue Rutile and Snow over Cobalt is a clean and elegant Cone 6 glaze combination created by Amber Schnitzius. Applied over a Cobalt base, this layering technique produces a rich deep-blue surface accented with soft, flowing white highlights along the rim. The piece was made using Laguna B-Mix with grog. Three coats of AMACO Cobalt create the dark foundation, while a single stripe of AMACO Blue Rutile adds movement and subtle variation. A thin double application of AMACO Snow on the rim softens the transition and develops a creamy white edge during firing. This combination demonstrates how a small amount of Blue Rutile can introduce depth and visual interest without overpowering the cobalt background. Snow remains concentrated near the rim, gently melting into the surface and creating a smooth, natural transition.
