Amaizing Vertical Green Frozen Pond By Leigh-Ann Naus

Frozen Pond with AMACO Storm and Seaweed

The Vertical Green Frozen Pond technique builds on the well-known Frozen Pond glazing method originally developed by Kathy McGuire. Traditionally, this technique involves a base glaze, followed by dots of Running Hot Chowder (RHC), and then a fluid covering glaze that creates organic, water-like movement during firing.

On our site, we feature a beautiful collection of multicolored Frozen Pond pieces, along with a brief overview of this glazing approach. However, the Vertical Green Frozen Pond introduces two important and visually striking nuances that set it apart from the traditional method.

Scallops Instead of Dots

Rather than applying Running Hot Chowder in dots, as is commonly done, the Vertical Green Frozen Pond technique uses scalloped patterns. These repeating arcs guide the glaze flow in a more structured yet still organic way, encouraging movement that resembles layered ripples or overlapping currents beneath a frozen surface.

This subtle shift in application creates a more rhythmic and directional flow, enhancing both texture and visual depth.

Vertical Firing for Dynamic Movement

The second key difference in the Vertical Green Frozen Pond technique is that the piece is fired vertically rather than horizontally. This dramatically changes how the glaze moves during firing.

Instead of pooling evenly, the glaze flows downward, creating elongated drips, blends, and transitions that mimic melting ice or water streaming over organic surfaces. The result is a more dynamic and gravity-driven effect, reinforcing the illusion of a frozen pond in motion.
