Textured Underglazed Fish Mug

A Textured Underglazed Fish Mug is a wonderful example of how carved texture and layered underglazes can bring ceramic decoration to life. Created by Elaine Diamond, this mug combines detailed relief carving with bright underglaze colors to produce a lively underwater scene filled with expressive fish.

Unlike glazes that develop their appearance during firing, underglazes allow the artist to paint fine details while preserving crisp edges and textures. The carved surface adds depth, allowing the colors to settle naturally into the recessed areas and making every fish stand out against the light clay body.

Color Palette

This project uses a carefully selected combination of Velvet underglazes to create warm oranges, cool blues, soft greens, and subtle shading.

Texture and Surface Detail

One of the most attractive aspects of this Textured Underglazed Fish Mug is the carved surface. The raised outlines naturally separate the colors, making it easier to achieve clean painted details while enhancing the dimensional effect after firing.

The combination of carving and underglaze creates visual depth without relying on flowing glaze movement, making this technique suitable for artists who enjoy illustration and detailed decorative work.
