Snow and Blue Midnight Over Indigo Float

Blue Ocean Combo Mug by Samuel Jaramillo

Snow and Blue Midnight Over Indigo Float by Samuel Jaramillo

Deep Blue Layering at Cone 5

Samuel Jaramillo created this tall stoneware mug using Standard clay body 2661 and a carefully ordered glaze combination built around Indigo Float. The surface begins with two coats of AMACO Indigo Float, followed by three thick coats of AMACO Blue Midnight. Near the lower edge of the blue section, two thick coats of AMACO Snow were added where the glazes begin to break and flow together. Fired to Cone 5, the mug developed heavy movement along the transition line, with dark blue rivers folding into pale mineral textures above the bare clay.

Snow and Blue Midnight Over Indigo Float on Standard 2661 Clay

The interaction between AMACO Blue Midnight and Indigo Float creates depth that shifts across the curved walls of the mug. Near the rim, the glaze cools into dense cobalt and black-blue glass, while lower areas reveal lighter blue passages suspended beneath the glossy surface. AMACO Snow interrupts the darker tones with a soft white edge that resembles sea foam gathering along wet shoreline stone. On Standard 2661 clay, the combination remains clean and saturated, allowing the layered application to stay visually sharp after the Cone 5 firing cycle.

Controlled Flow and Surface Movement

This Snow and Blue Midnight Over Indigo Float combination works especially well on vertical forms where gravity can pull the glaze downward during firing. Samuel Jaramillo’s mug shows how thick application changes the surface from top to bottom: the upper section remains smooth and reflective, while the lower edge begins to ripple and crystallize where Snow overlaps the darker glazes. The exposed clay body near the foot gives the composition room to breathe and balances the weight of the deep blue glaze above it.
