Ocean Glaze Combo by Missy Anne

Author: Missy Anne
Clay Body: Not specified
Firing: Cone 6 with a 5-minute hold

Ocean Glaze Combo is a carefully layered Cone 6 glaze combination created by Missy Anne to recreate the colors and textures of a coastal shoreline. The upper portion of the mug is covered in Laguna Power Turquoise, applied to both the exterior and interior. This glaze establishes the dominant ocean-blue color, creating a calm backdrop that resembles shallow tropical water. The soft matte texture and vertical movement of the glaze reinforce the feeling of water meeting the horizon.

How Ocean Glaze Combo Creates a Coastal Landscape

The lower section of the mug is built on MAYCO Winter Wood, a warm beige glaze that introduces the appearance of sand and weathered shoreline. Between the turquoise upper section and the sandy base, AMACO River Birch is applied with a slight overlap onto Winter Wood. During firing, River Birch develops textured ridges and flowing bands that resemble waves breaking along the beach. Rather than blending completely, the glazes maintain distinct layers, allowing the landscape effect to remain visible from every angle.

A final application of AMACO Honey Flux is placed along the border between Laguna Power Turquoise and the textured middle section. As the kiln reaches Cone 6 temperature, Honey Flux encourages localized movement and softens the transition between colors. The result is a surface where turquoise water, foamy wave patterns, and sandy shoreline tones come together in a single composition. Ocean Glaze Combo demonstrates how strategic glaze placement can transform a simple mug into a ceramic interpretation of a coastal scene while preserving the unique contribution of each glaze in the layering sequence.
