Oatmeal and Ancient Jasper over River Rock is a layered Cone 5 glaze combination that combines a dark reactive base with warm floating highlights. River Rock provides depth and texture, while Oatmeal and Ancient Jasper create flowing areas of cream, gold, brown, and rust as the glazes melt together during firing.

How Oatmeal and Ancient Jasper over River Rock Works

River Rock is applied over the entire piece and forms the foundation of the combination. It develops a dark surface with charcoal, blue, black, and earthy brown variation. Its reactive character remains visible beneath the upper layers and adds depth throughout the finished glaze.

A wide band of Oatmeal is brushed around the middle of the tumbler. As the kiln reaches temperature, Oatmeal begins to soften and move over the darker base, producing lighter cream and honey-colored areas while still allowing River Rock to show through.

Ancient Jasper is applied over the Oatmeal band. It introduces warm rust, golden brown, and reddish mineral tones that blend into the surrounding glazes. Instead of covering the previous layers completely, Ancient Jasper interacts with them, creating gradual transitions and additional color variation.

A final application of Oatmeal over Ancient Jasper encourages even more movement. During the firing, the upper layer softens the transitions, producing flowing highlights and subtle overlaps that give the surface its layered appearance.

Clay body: White stoneware
Base: AMACO River Rock – 2 coats over the entire piece
Second layer: Wide band of AMACO Oatmeal starting approximately ½ inch above the foot
Third layer: Wide band of AMACO Ancient Jasper overlapping the Oatmeal
Top layer: Wide band of AMACO Oatmeal over Ancient Jasper
Firing: Cone 5 with a 10-minute hold

Firing Results

The appearance of this combination depends on glaze thickness, overlap, clay body, and kiln performance. Thicker applications of Oatmeal produce more movement, while lighter applications preserve more of the River Rock surface. Ancient Jasper adds warm mineral tones without completely hiding the underlying layers, making the combination responsive to small changes in application.

Oatmeal and Ancient Jasper over River Rock works particularly well on mugs, tumblers, and other rounded forms where the glazes have space to flow naturally. Testing on your own clay body and with your firing schedule is recommended, as the balance between movement and color development can vary from kiln to kiln
