Blue and White Vase by Laura Pearsons

Laura Pearsons created this folded stoneware vase using a layered combination of AMACO River Birch and AMACO Celadon Mulberry. Fired to Cone 5, the glaze surface develops soft blue-gray movement, creamy white pooling and pale lavender undertones that gather around the folds and carved textures of the form. The flowing vertical lines created by River Birch give the vase a weathered, organic appearance, while Mulberry introduces cool atmospheric color that settles gently into the contours of the clay.

The shape of the vase plays an important role in the final result. The folded rim and twisted walls encourage the glaze to break and collect unevenly during firing, creating subtle variation across the entire surface. In this Mulberry Over River Birch combo, the River Birch base produces layered texture and floating streaks, while Celadon Mulberry softens the composition with translucent blue-violet haze. The pale surface shifts depending on the direction of light, moving between warm ivory, misty blue and muted gray.

This Mulberry Over River Birch glaze combination demonstrates how mid-fire commercial glazes can create surfaces that feel calm, balanced and naturally aged. Laura Pearsons uses controlled layering rather than heavy contrast, allowing the movement of the glazes to remain delicate and spacious. Fired at Cone 5 oxidation, the vase develops a surface reminiscent of worn porcelain, river stone and faded mineral deposits shaped slowly over time.
