Deep Sea and Seaweed over Textured Turquoise by Elisabeth Harp

Deep Sea and Seaweed over Textured Turquoise

Color can suggest an entire landscape, and this mug by Elisabeth Harp does exactly that. Built around a base of AMACO Textured Turquoise, the surface develops flowing ribbons of blue and green that recall tidal channels, sea grass, and shifting coastal water. The glaze pattern wraps around the form in soft vertical movement, giving the mug a sense of rhythm that complements its elegant silhouette. Photographed against snow-covered bark, the contrast between winter white and oceanic color makes the glaze appear even more luminous.

Layering Deep Sea and Seaweed over Textured Turquoise

The foundation of this combination is three coats of AMACO Textured Turquoise, a glaze known for its rich color and active surface. Over this base, alternating bands of AMACO Seaweed and AMACO Deep Sea are applied, creating areas where the glazes blend, separate, and overlap during firing. The interaction produces a network of flowing lines, deep blue currents, and bright turquoise highlights. Rather than forming a uniform surface, the glazes create variation across every part of the mug, ensuring that each viewing angle reveals a different composition.

Cone 6 Results with Deep Sea, Seaweed over Textured Turquoise

Fired to Cone 6 in a community kiln with no hold, the glaze combination develops strong color contrast while maintaining crisp movement between layers. Deep Sea contributes rich cobalt tones, while Seaweed introduces green accents that soften and balance the palette. Together with Textured Turquoise, they create a surface that feels fluid and natural, reminiscent of water moving over stone beneath a clear sky. Elisabeth Harp’s mug demonstrates how a simple layering approach can transform commercial glazes into a finish filled with depth, color variation, and visual energy.
