Iron Lustre over Blue Lagoon AMACO Iron Lustre Over Blue Lagoon Combo This AMACO Iron Lustre Over Blue Lagoon combo demonstrates how a dark metallic glaze can transform a stable blue base into a surface with increased depth, contrast, and visual variation. Created by Laurel Haigh Gore, this tumbler combines Satin Matte Blue/Green, Blue Lagoon, and Iron Lustre to produce a layered Cone 5–6 glaze effect with flowing transitions and pronounced color separation. Why This Combination Works Blue Lagoon provides the dominant blue foundation in this combination. Applied over a base of Satin Matte Blue/Green, it creates a rich blue surface that remains visible across much of the lower section of the tumbler. Iron Lustre is then applied as a band around the upper portion of the piece and on the interior. Rather than covering the underlying glazes completely, Iron Lustre introduces darker metallic tones that interact with the blue layers beneath. During firing, these darker tones soften and break into the surrounding glaze, creating areas of contrast and visual depth. The combination works particularly well because the darker Iron Lustre emphasizes the movement already present in Blue Lagoon. Instead of a single uniform blue surface, the overlap creates multiple zones where colors blend, separate, and pool differently. Glaze Interaction and Firing Behavior One of the most noticeable features of this test is the transition between the darker upper section and the bright blue lower section. As the glazes mature in the kiln, the overlap zone develops streaks and vertical movement that draw attention to the interaction between the layers. Blue Lagoon remains the primary color contributor, while Iron Lustre acts as an accent glaze that adds darker definition and variation. The underlying Satin Matte Blue/Green helps support the overall color palette and contributes to the softer blue-green tones visible near the upper portions of the tumbler. The overlap area shows how Iron Lustre can be used to introduce contrast without completely obscuring the base glaze. Potters exploring layered commercial glazes may find this combination useful when looking for ways to add darker visual elements to blue glaze surfaces while preserving the character of the underlying glaze.
