Raspberry Mist over Obsidian Combo by Stefanie Montana

Raspberry Mist over Obsidian Mug by Stefanie Montana

This mug by Stefanie Montana showcases the Raspberry Mist over Obsidian glaze combination fired to Cone 5. The surface combines a glossy black foundation with flowing bands of raspberry pink, red, blue, and brown created through layered commercial glazes. The result highlights how contrasting colors can develop depth and variation when multiple glaze layers interact during firing.

Obsidian forms the primary base across the exterior and interior of the mug, providing a dark background that enhances the brighter colors above it. Stripes of MAYCO Raspberry Mist and MAYCO Red Gloss introduce vivid pink and red tones, while lines of Albany Slip Brown contribute darker accents and help define the transitions between color zones. As the glazes melt and move, the surface develops areas of pooling, blending, and vertical runs that follow the shape of the form.

How Raspberry Mist over Obsidian Behaves

One of the most noticeable features of Raspberry Mist over Obsidian is the contrast between the glossy black base and the lighter colors layered above it. On this piece, raspberry and red tones spread across the middle section of the mug, while blue and brown areas emerge where the glazes overlap. The darker background helps separate the color bands, making individual layers easier to see after firing.

Additional complexity comes from the use of Cosmic Tea Dust and Albany Slip Brown. These glazes contribute darker streaks, metallic-looking highlights, and textured transitions that appear to drip from the upper portion of the mug. The combination demonstrates how multiple glaze layers can create varied surfaces while still maintaining a clear visual relationship with the Obsidian base.

Surface and Firing Results

The Cone 5 firing with a 20-minute hold allowed the glazes to fully develop and interact across the surface. The exterior displays pronounced movement, while the interior remains simpler with three coats of AMACO Obsidian. This approach keeps the inside functional and consistent while allowing the outside to showcase the layered glaze effects.
