Laguna Power Turquoise at cone 6

This ocean-toned mug by Jeremy Biggs shows how Laguna Power Turquoise develops on a smooth functional form at cone 6 oxidation. The glaze settles into deep blue-green pools around the lower walls and handle while lighter turquoise areas remain bright near the rim and shoulder. On rounded porcelain and light stoneware forms, Power Turquoise often breaks into darker mineral edges that resemble seawater moving over wet rock.

The surface becomes more complex through layered application. In this firing, Laguna Power Turquoise was combined with AMACO Honey Flux, AMACO Rainforest, and AMACO Snow to build movement and soft atmospheric transitions through the middle and lower sections of the mug. Honey Flux encourages subtle flow and blending between layers, while Snow cools the composition with pale floating edges and white crystalline variation near the base. Fired at cone 6 oxidation, the glaze remains glossy and fluid without losing the shape of the form.

Jeremy Biggs’ piece works because the glaze application follows the architecture of the mug itself. The darker turquoise gathers naturally where the clay curves inward, while the lighter flowing layers open toward the bottom like sea foam against stone. Power Turquoise responds especially well to simple silhouettes and clean throwing lines, allowing the glaze chemistry to become the visual focus of the piece.
