Ancient Jasper on Textured Clay at Cone 6

Tammi Marie’s Ancient Jasper finish carries the warmth of weathered canyon stone and carved copper left out in autumn rain. Built on a richly textured clay body and fired to cone 6 oxidation, the surface settles into deep iron browns, smoky bronze, and layered crimson tones that gather naturally inside every carved line. The glaze breaks beautifully across raised patterns, allowing the texture itself to become part of the composition instead of disappearing beneath a glossy coat.

The piece combines AMACO Ancient Jasper with a carefully controlled application over textured stoneware. On heavily stamped clay, the glaze pools darker in recesses while thinner areas soften into earthy metallic highlights. Tammi Marie’s work demonstrates how much movement and visual depth can develop from a single glaze when the clay surface is prepared thoughtfully. The result feels less manufactured and more geological – almost like polished rock cut directly from a desert wall.

Cone 6 firings often reward glazes that respond well to texture, and Ancient Jasper belongs firmly in that category. On smooth forms it produces a calm satin finish, but on carved pottery it becomes layered and dramatic without losing balance.
