Northern Lights Glaze Combo Mugs by Violet Andrus

Typical Northern Lights glaze version with additional texture

Four mugs of Violet Andrus were used to explore the addition of mountain and tree textures within a typical Northern Lights glaze combination. Each mug turned out slightly differently as various placements and layering choices were tested to see how the textures interacted with the glazes. The mountain texture was created using an MKM roller, while the trees were formed using a silicone mold.

The glaze layering includes AMACO Obsidian applied up to, but not over, the textured areas, followed by Smokey Merlot, Chun Plum, Seaweed, and Midnight Blue, with a small amount of Oatmeal applied beneath the Smokey Merlot. Several variations were compared, and it was observed that using only Blue Rutile on the mountain texture resulted in little visible difference compared to more complex applications.

All mugs were made with Plainsman M340 clay and fired to cone 6.

Manganese and copper washes were used beneath AMACO Blue Rutile on the mountain texture, with Chun Plum glaze inside. Later tests suggested the washes may be optional, as similar results were achieved using Blue Rutile alone
