Ancient Jasper, Seaweed and Oatmeal over Storm Mug by Beth Sue<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This beautiful mug, made from Laguna 55 clay<\/strong> by Beth Sue<\/strong>, features a flowing Storm combo<\/strong> layered with rich blue and green tones. The surface is built on a deep base of AMACO Storm<\/strong>, creating a strong foundation for the glazes layered above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two coats of AMACO Ancient Jasper<\/strong> are applied near the top, followed by two coats of AMACO Seaweed<\/strong> over Storm<\/strong>, allowing the colors to interact and break naturally as they melt. A single thick coat of AMACO Oatmeal<\/strong> at the rim softens the transition and adds visual contrast. Together, the layers create movement, depth, and a sense of organic flow across the surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A pre-fire photo of this mug was included, offering valuable insight into how this glaze combination was built before firing. Seeing the placement, thickness, and overlap of each glaze layer makes it much easier to understand how the final surface developed in the kiln. This visual reference allows other potters to more accurately recreate the combination, from the full coverage of AMACO Storm to the controlled application of Ancient Jasper and Seaweed near the rim. The pre-fire image clearly shows where glazes were applied more heavily, where they were allowed to thin, and how the layers were stacked\u2014details that are often difficult to describe with words alone.
