Different Base Glazes Frozen Ponds by Jon Fiala

Expanding the “Frozen Pond” Glazing Technique

Kathy McGuire’s signature “Frozen Pond” glazing technique creates a striking, icy effect on pottery through a careful layering process. The original method involves applying some coats of Amaco’s Obsidian glaze, followed by two coats of Spectrum’s Running Hot Chowder in dot patterns, and finishing with a single coat of AMACO Iron Lustre.

Jon Fiala has taken this technique further by experimenting with different base glazes. His creative approach has expanded the potential of “Frozen Pond,” resulting in beautiful and unique variations.

His work highlights the versatility of the method – wonderful exploration
