Textured Turquoise over Honey Flux Over Obsidian combo by Donna Cormier

Frozen Pond with Textured Turquoise Over Honey Flux Over Obsidian

This test of Textured Turquoise over Honey Flux Over Obsidian demonstrates how a strong flux layer can completely transform the appearance of a dark glaze base.

The combination begins with AMACO Obsidian, which provides a deep black background and strong visual contrast. Over the Obsidian, Honey Flux is applied in circular patterns. During firing, Honey Flux becomes highly active and encourages surrounding glazes to move, soften, and blend. Finally, Textured Turquoise is layered over the flux areas, producing the characteristic blue pools and floating circular effects visible across the surface.

How the Glazes Interact

Obsidian acts primarily as the foundation glaze. Its dark surface creates depth and allows the lighter colors above to stand out dramatically.

Honey Flux serves as the engine of the combination. As the kiln approaches Cone 5–6 temperatures, the flux begins to mobilize the upper glaze layers, pulling color outward and creating soft halos around each application area.

Textured Turquoise contributes the bright blue coloration. Where it overlaps Honey Flux, the glaze develops lighter centers, soft transitions, and subtle variations in tone. The interaction creates a surface that resembles clusters of pebbles, bubbles, or frozen droplets suspended above the dark background.

Firing Results

One of the most interesting aspects of this combination is the variation from circle to circle. Small differences in glaze thickness create changes in color intensity, movement, and opacity. Some areas remain sharply defined, while others melt into softer transitions.

The dark Obsidian background enhances the depth effect, making the turquoise pools appear almost three-dimensional.
