January 2, 2026January 26, 2026 Palladium (PC-04) AMACO Palladium glaze samples made by different artists AMACO Palladium (PC-04, Potter’s Choice) is a cone 5–6 stoneware glaze that produces a high-gloss, mirror-like metallic finish (often described as chrome/silver). Firing: Cone 5–6 (approx. 1200–1240 °C, depending on your kiln). Application: Typically 3 coats for an even metallic “mirror” look. Behavior: Can be runny if applied too thick or fired too hotleave a clean foot and protect shelves. Best results: Often looks best on dense, well – vitrified clay bodies. Safety: Generally listed as not food safe – avoid use on surfaces that touch food or drink (inside of cups or bowls, rims). “I made a couple of nice twist vases based on a YouTube tutorial by Tiffany Bailey. This twisted vase is just 3x Palladium. I glazed only the outside of this one to avoid bubbles. The shine produced by the glaze is fabulous. Valentine’s B17C buff stoneware clay fired to cone 6. It was fired in a school kiln, so it wasn’t fully under my control. From what I understand, the stoneware program runs at about 126°C/hour up to 1260°C, with a 10-minute soak at the top. It’s definitely worth doing a test tile with your clay + kiln combo, since results can vary. We’ve had pretty consistent results on our buff stoneware, but it looked very different on black clay—more like an antique mirror than the high-shine finish in my photo” Dave Collett “I have used it before and this is it straight from the bottle. I also used it the other day on a horrendous re-glaze and it did cover up some of the glaze underneath, it does tend to have pin holes, so be careful with application and firing. I have fired it to 1200 (celsius) with good results and on the re-fire I glazed it at 1185 and held at 20 min, a trick for reglazing to get rid of pinholes. best of luck, its a beautiful glaze if you are after that effect” (Keegan Luttrell) ” I love it, it runs alot. I gave it two layers and stopped half way on the item. It does not play well with others, but I used it like “light flux” from Mayco on a natural color glazes ( only a thin line on the egde).Fired at cone 7-8″ (Anna Catrine Siversten) I get better metallic results when I underglaze with black (Helga De Sultansofswing) 4 coats, 1200 degrees and 20 min hold (Linda Ham) “Laguna bmix. I think 3 coats (student work), cone 6 slow. Always a mirror metallic for us! Hs students fight over this glaze!” (Rebecca Walther) I put a piece of Kanthal wire through the hole in the top and hung it off a alumina rod. You can find a tutorial on how I made them on my YouTube. Molten Mud Studio (Gretchen Nielsen) “Four coats, cone 6. It’s black/silver mirror, not gold” (Maiah Cossill) “I had to refire this piece. Palladium requires 4-5 coats and I used 3 originally, and the surface was irregular with pinholes on the seams. But with 4-5 coats, including some mirror black along the seams ( which covered the pinholes) it ran. If I used it again, I might use an engobe at the bottom of my pot. I used black underglaze here anticipating running since it is a persnickety glaze” (Christy Hudgins Dammen) Solo Palladium
